| It
has been my distinct honour to represent all of you in this capacity for
the past 10 plus years. I have been at Calgary Co-op for over
twenty
years, representing you in one capacity or another for fifteen of those
years. I have served you (via the union) as shop steward, treasurer,
office clerk, bargaining committee member in three rounds of negotiations
(NOT the 8% rollback contract), and finally as your president. This
union, which is all of you, has been and will continue to be a long-term
commitment for me.
While working at Calgary Co-op, I served in the cash office for ten years. Prior to coming to work at Co-op, I had two years experience as a head cashier in a grocery store and seven years banking experience with CIBC. There could not possibly have been any more appropriate background for a cash office position, yet I was still started at bottom rate. I am glad to report that this has changed under my leadership and previous experience is now recognized as something of value. Even when working in non-union environments, I was accessed by co-workers on a regular basis to be their spokesperson and act on their behalf. I have never been afraid to stand up for my rights or those of others. This has been a natural role for me all of my life and I am happy to be able to utilize these skills and abilities to your advantage. My motto is "Better to die on your feet than live on your knees". I am certainly looking forward to serving all of you for many years to come. Stand up and be counted! In Unity, Pat
Rose President, UCCE
